A Statistical Comparision of Medical Attributes in Aircrews of Differing Size Aircraft

Abstract
This study assesses the correlation between flight size and certain medical factors. Data were collected from 674 aircrews (captins, first officers, and flight engineers) who had worked more than one year for a commercial airline as of November
30,
1988. The crew member were divided operationally into two groups by size of aircraft that they flew.
This study identifies significant statistical differences all medical factors in large size and small -medium size aircraft within the age groups (below 40, 40-49, and over 50 years) (p<0.05) : systolic and diastolic blood pressure, forced and
timed
vital capacity, average hearing loss, and average uncorrected far vision. Cholesterol level of crew members of large size aircraft, and the smoking index of crew members of small-medium aircraft were not significantly different within the three
age
groups.
